Whether a Roof Stays Free
This line has been asked and it has failed. It stays on the worksheet because a reader deserves to know which questions have already been tried.
The four fields
- What the hold asks
- If a hold names covered ground, will covered ground still be free when the car arrives
- What comes back
- No lot will say yes. The replies are versions of subject to availability, and that is what the hold prints
- When to ask
- There is no useful moment. The question has been put and the answer does not change
- If it is not asked
- Nothing changes, which is the honest shape of this line and the reason it is on the sheet
What lots actually say
Not no, and not yes. Some version of: covered ground is allocated when a car arrives, we cannot commit a particular space in advance, and availability depends on the day.
That is a reasonable position for a lot to hold. Covered ground is the scarcest thing on any of these sites in January, it fills on the worst mornings, and a lot that promised it to everybody would be promising the same roof several times over.
Why this counter will not soften it
There are three tempting ways to write around this, and all three are the same lie in different clothes.
Naming it as a feature. "Covered parking available" is true and it answers a different question from the one you asked. Anything is available; nothing is promised.
Quoting a probability. "Usually free before ten in the morning" would be an estimate this counter cannot support, dressed as an operational fact.
Charging for it. A supplement for covered ground reads as a purchase of covered ground. Where a lot prices covered ground differently, the rates page prints the range and says plainly that the price buys a category, not a promise.
So the line prints the refusal, and the quote prints the refusal, and no page here implies otherwise.
What you can do instead, which is not nothing
Two things, and they are both about arriving rather than about booking:
- Arrive earlier than the shuttle pattern requires on a bad morning. Covered ground goes first, and the only person who can act on that is you.
- Ask what happens if it is full when you get there. A lot that will say what the fallback is has told you something checkable, and that question is answerable even though this one is not.
The claims sheet reads the same way
same_day is false, and this line is part of the reason. A desk that cannot promise a roof cannot promise ground today either. Every flag on the claims sheet names who would have to confirm it, and for most of them the answer is an operator that has agreed to something in writing. None has.
- Whether anyone is there at nightThe other silent line, and the one with the shortest answer.
- What nobody confirmsBoth silent lines together, with what would have to change.
- RatesWhat a difference in price between open and covered ground actually buys.
- The perimeterA question about the same ground that a lot will answer.
